36th ANNUAL CUB SCOUT PACK-28 PINEWOOD DERBY
The thirty-sixth Annual Cub Scout Pack-28 Pinewood Derby will be held this year on Saturday, March 23, 2013 starting at 2 pm at the Undermountain Elementary School Cafeteria, Sheffield.
Friday night, March 22nd from 6 pm to 7pm, Preliminary Technical Inspection of the cars will be conducted at the American Legion Hall in Sheffield.
This Friday night inspection is optional but is beneficial to the Cub Scout and parents in assuring you that your racer meets the specifications ahead of race day on Saturday. It also permits sufficient time between Friday night and Saturday so that the racer may be brought up to specifications. The main benefit of this Friday inspection is that it avoids any unnecessary frustration or disappointments which might otherwise occur when being inspected on race day - Saturday afternoon.
On Friday night, all cars will be given a full inspection. At this inspection Friday night, weight is permitted to be added to bring a cars total weight up to the maximum of 5 ounces.
Saturday, March 23rd, from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm, Race Technical Inspection of cars entering the Pack 28 Pinewood Derby at the Undermountain School Cafeteria, Sheffield.
This final inspection on Saturday is necessary for all entrants who want to race.If your car is weighed in on Saturday and is found to be underweight, weight cannot be added to your car. Your car will run at a disadvantage and it will be……s l o w
On Saturday, all Cub Scouts with their racers should arrive early to assure that your car will be inspected before the racing starts at 2 pm.
Pinewood Derby kits will be distributed to each Cub Scout. Your completed model racer must conform to the following specifications in order to pass inspection:
1. Width of body at axles must remain at 1 ¾ inches.
2. Width of outside tire edge to outside tire edge must not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
3. Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
4. Total model weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
5. Axles, wheels, and the axle pre-cut grooves in the wood block, plus the wood block shall be from the materials provided in the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby kit. The pre-cut axle grooves in the pinewood block must be used in order to maintain uniformity and equality among all contestants. There will be no exceptions.
6. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
7. Liquid lubricant or silicone spray is not allowed. Only dry lubricant is permitted for the axles.
8. The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
9. Flashing or excess plastic may be shaved off the kit plastic tires to create aFLAT surface.Shaving tire treads down to an edge, ridge, and/or rounding is strictly prohibited and will result in an automatic disqualification.
10. Cars must be free-wheeling with no starting devices.
11. No loose materials of any kind are allowed in or on the cars.
• Each car is thoroughly inspected first before the Cub Scout registers for the Derby.
• The Pinewood Derby kit - straight out of the box - weighs only 4.3 ounces.
• The Cub Scout must be present at the Derby to run his car.
